BIERCE, AMBROSE (1842-1914)
A former Civil War correspondent, Bierce made his name in San Francisco penning of of the world’s great funny reads, “The Devil’s Dictionary,” a collection of scathing definitions of everyday words.  He went to Mexico to cover a story on Pancho Villa, and was never heard from again.  A true American maverick whose name should be promoted more.

BORGES, JORGE LUIS (1899-1986)
My favorite writer of all time, this Argentine Hispano-Saxon is the archetype for all fiction writers, using history, surrealism and a sense of wonder to pen some rather gorgeous stories.
THE BORGES CENTER – Hosted by the University of Iowa, this is the best clearinghouse of Borges-related literature.

BURROUGHS, WILLIAM SEWARD (1914-1997)
The Lion of the Beat Generation, in my opinion, much more so than a child molester like Allen Ginsberg.  Despite his addictions and homosexuality, Burroughs managed to put together a body of writing that still repulses and compels its readers to this day, covering topics such as drug abuse, fascism and an odd look at race relations.  He was not only a dour man, but a true American iconoclast as well.
